the balcony is closing for the last time

and that's just really sad. I really loved Siskel & Ebert, for me they were the first example of great chemistry between co-hosts on television that I'd ever seen (something that a lot of television execs could learn from, this is what makes good television and could make anything from morning shows to sports coverage so much more entertaining and enjoyable to the viewer. instead they just put a couple of "all-stars" together and wonder why it just doesn't work out. anyway...) it's been sad seeing Siskel pass away and Ebert's health decline over the years but somehow you always got the feeling that they were still behind the good show you saw every week. though it wasn't very easy to like Roeper, I've grown to respect his opinions. sadly the network and talent have come to a point of disagreement and no return (over money) and come August you'll see the last episode of the show as we know it. sure there are plans to have another show with a couple of young Bens hosting but who really cares? shame on everyone involved for allowing money to end this great program. two thumbs down.

update

to this post. apparently people don't like the design and are calling it an ugly donut (this according to TIME mag) well I think they should take those people out and shoot 'em! they do that in China, right? seriously, I can't get enough of that building

WE'RE AMERICAN, FOR CRYING OUTLOUD!

have you seen this? it's the headquarters for a television station in China. seriously, this is a real building and it's nothing more than a glorified office space... just amazing. and then you have this- I would think that we are more motivated to build something more beautiful and awe inspiring than the Chinese television station but... I guess when you're "mourning" you have to do things slowly, inefficiently and ugly.

FREAKING SHERLOCK HOLMES, MAN

everything comes in twos, in Hollywood, i.e. Antz & A Bug's Life, Event Horizon & Sphere, Happy Accidents & Return to Me, etc.
anyway, there are two (should be good) versions of the classic "Sherlock Holmes" to be filmed later this year-
the first by Judd Apatow starring Sacha Baron Cohen & Will Ferrell. obviously a comedy, should be hilarious...
the second by GUY RITCHIE starring ROBERT DOWNEY JUNIOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes, I'm very excited.

y'all is great.

I type "y'all" because that's more of a literal contraction of the two words without adding the slang term "ya" in there. though everyone I know types "ya'll" but they also so "yea" when they mean "yeah" and "ya" when they mean "yea!"

July 7, 2008

do you remember Wilson from the television program Home Improvement? well my Wilson passed away today. sort of coincidental that the wikipedia page about the actor that played Wilson described the character as being a "beloved grandfatherly neighbor" because that's probably the most accurate description of Royce. my entire life my parents have had the same two neighbors to either side of our house. Royce lived with his wife Betty in the house next to my room. I remember laughing when Royce told me about having to "drive all of the way to Fitzhugh, far North Dallas" to see his then girlfriend, Betty. Royce was compulsively clad in either jeans or coveralls and until recently always smelled like pipe tobacco. Royce told me the story of the Freemasons, which he was a proud member. once my brother moved to college and the lawn mowing duties became my responsibility Royce taught me how to take apart, repair and put back together our Toro lawnmower. I can't describe the way that Royce was always there to help whenever I had an outdoor project. the Royce I knew liked to talk but never talked too fast, never raised his voice, never was sarcastic or cynical. he was a good neighbor
